Attention Parents of 8th Grade Students:

High School Planning is a year-long process and began in October 2019. I began by visiting 8th grade History classes and working with students to complete a High School Planning Survey. Students worked individually to complete a survey that gave me insight to best meets their needs. We then heard presentations from the three public high school options available to all Watertown students: Watertown High School, Kaynor Technical High School and Nonnewaug (Ellis Clark School of Agri-Science). During these presentations, students learned about the different program offerings at each school and were then able to follow up with me if they wanted to receive an application to Kaynor Tech and or Nonnewaug. Over the course of the month, I met with all interested applicants in a series of small groups and reviewed the application requirements, answered questions and address deadlines for submission. From there, I followeded up with the entire 8th grade by visiting their Language Arts classes over the course of a two day period. During this time we used a working outline to clarify high school options and the process required for applying to either public or private high schools. All students were able to keep their outlines since it contains helpful information in regard to overall high school planning.

Over the course of December and January I processed applications for students applying to private high schools.  In January students visited the high school for a tour and information session.

Advanced algebra students were also able to apply to the high school Ready program and submitted applications by January 17.

With Spring on the horizon, we have begun the Watertown High School course registration process. During the week of February 21st, I went into 8th grade history classes to familiarize students with the online course selection process. All students have been provided with their individual username and password information for Power School. They will use this information to log into Power School and select high school course electives. Each student will bring home a packet containing directions and helpful course planning information. The course selection portal will be open on Power School from Friday, February 21st- February 28th. Students must sign up for electives courses during this window of time. Please note that 8th grade core academic subject teachers already entered level recommendations for their subject area. Students must select a total of 8 credits (this includes core academic subjects listed/recommended by teachers). WHS counselors will visit the 8th grade during the second week of March and meet with each student individually to review course selection and answer any questions students may have.

Please note * ALL STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE COURSE REGISTRATION FOR WHS REGARDLESS OF ACCEPTANCE/PLANS TO ATTEND ANY OTHER SCHOOL.

I am excited to support this important time in your child’s school career. Please reach out with any questions, concerns, or information as we take this journey together!

Sincerely,

Julie Ayer
